Readers of LEAVE BY ANY DOOR hopefully may remember revelations in their own lives when they realized ‘dominoes’ had to have fallen just right and at just the right time to have led them through a jungle of an existence or an out of control desperate situation. An epiphany, if you will that God’s hand must have been at work the whole time. In LEAVE BY ANY DOOR our first clue of this is a scribbled note 13-year old Greg Williams jots down to himself – as confusing to him at the time as if written by another’s hand; it simply reads, “Life is the Lord talking to you.”

“Gregory Alan? Are you still awake, honey?”
“No, I’m okay, Mom. What’s up?” I yawned, but didn’t turn on the light. As she came closer I saw she held a can of beer in each hand.
“I just thought I’d bring you something honey, something that’ll help you sleep, sweetheart.”
“Thanks Mom.” I sat them down on the floor next to my bed and held my arms up to her. She fell into them and whispered,
“Mama loves you, sweetheart. I’m sorry things are so dog gone hard for us right now but everything’s going to get better – you just wait and see.” I had tears in my eyes by then,
“I know Mom.” I told her, but she must have sensed my doubts.
As she gently rose to leave she added softly but with finality,
“I mean it Gregory Alan. We’re going to be alright, sweetheart. Don’t you give up on me now!”

It’s been said an author’s first novel is always an autobiography – so it was with Leave by
Any Door. During this process I experienced feelings that ranged from agony to exhilaration. Of course, such recollections can be therapeutic, heartfelt, frustrating, painful; and yet through it all, highly entertaining. I hope, dear reader, that you enjoy the ride as much as I did.
